What is Charm Casting you ask? Charm Casting is a lesser-known form of divination that requires nothing more than bits, bobs & trinkets as your tools. Sometimes known as Charmancy, Charm Casting is growing in popularity. Like Tarot or Oracle are interpreted by the reader so are the charms interpreted by their individual symbolism.
When someone casts charms - they randomly choose a few charms from bag, box, cup, etc., and "cast" them on a surface to be "read" or interpreted. "Casting" can be done by tossing, dropping or shaking the charms on your selected surface. You can even pick individual charms and lay them in a "spread" like is done with Tarot cards. Some people, use casting mats with topics on them to help give their intuition a nudge, but that's not necessary, others read the patterns that the charms fall in, and others may even as a specific question before casting or choosing their charms. This in an intuitive practice, what works for you is fine.
Part of the growing popularity and fun of Charm Casting is how little it takes to get started. Here are the basics:
- A collection of charms (10 is a good number to start with, but really the sky is the limit)
- A place to store your charms ( a bag, box, cup, bowl - whatever you choose)
- A charm casting layout (this is optional, but I found it quite useful to have a starting point for readings as I was getting started - I still really like it!)
- A surface to cast your charms on (table, book, cloth, tray, mat, shallow bowl - you get the idea.
That's it! That's all you need!
Okay, so now for your charm set. I remember having a charm bracelet as a child that had cute individual charms each representing something or having a special meaning. Well, that's what your charm set will be made up of. Charms or trinkets that you have or collect that have a special meaning to you. It can be anything you choose:
- Old charms off of jewelry
- Dice
- Coins
- Broaches
- Beads
- Small findings
- Tiny trinkets
- Interesting buttons
- Interesting bottlecaps
- ANYTHING that YOU want to add to your collection
Spend time building your charm casting collection and let it grow as you practice. I love using charms off old jewelry, shells or rocks that I've found in nature, and coin with a significant date on it, it truly doesn't matter. Charm casting is a personal practice that can stand alone or be done along side your Tarot or Oracle practice. the choice is yours.
I'll share more about this obsession of mine. The "ins and outs" if you will, but for now, take a few minutes and rummage through your jewelry box, or maybe that junk drawer that holds everything - you may find just the right "charm" to start or add to your collection.
